Going to an acroyoga or a couples yoga class for the first time can feel exciting and overwhelming. The last thing you need to feel unsure of is your wardrobe. Not to worry, I got your back with these 5 tips for what to wear in a couples yoga or an acroyoga Class for new and seasoned enthusiasts.
Textured Bottoms
Especially important for acroyoga classes. You will soon be twisting into new shapes. It’s helpful if you have clothing that has a little more grip.
Fliers
Either slip into long leggings or longer shorts. Texture (what I like to call acroyoga pants) is a bonus. Your base has a bit more to hold on to and won’t slide off those ultra-slick yoga pants.
Have sensitive hips? Especially if you are familiar with side stars – you know what I’m talking about. Try jeans shorts but be aware of the belt loops.
Bases
Baggy shorts parachute open, so it’s a good idea to wear biker shorts or yoga pants. Feeling a little exposed? Not to worry, it’s a-okay to throw on a pair of gym shorts on top. Still not buying it? As you can see below, my partner wears denim jeans!

Couples Yoga & Acroyoga Friendly Tops
I am pro boobs & Free the Nipple Movement, but only if it’s intentional. When inversions (going upside down) happen, it’s nice to have a neckline that holds everything in place. Try a crew neck or a tank with a sports bra.

Form FittIng Top + Tucked in
It’s quite common to see fliers and bases adjusting their tops during an acroyoga class. A simple way to avoid this is by tucking your top in, especially fliers. I sometimes take the top out of the equation altogether and just wear a sports bra (with a higher neckline).

Hair Ties Are Important in Couples Yoga
Ever see those beautiful long luscious hair photos of acroyoga poses on Instagram? What you don’t see… Is how many extra shots the photographer made because the hair was in the face. I know this from experience… (see photo below).
Fliers
Put your hair up in a ponytail, braid, or bun. Your bases will thank you when you start doing things like whips (I’ve hurt my base’s sensitive parts). Target is my go to for blonde hair ties.
Bases
Bonus points for bringing extra hair ties. My partner carries around a bag full of them – he’s the best!

Barefoot wanderer
Shoes are not recommended because they hurt. That is all…
Flier & Base:
Best to be barefoot. If you live in a colder climate or are more comfortable with socks on try these yoga socks. The key is to look for socks with grip to stay more connected to your acro partner.
BUT real talk my partner is not a fan of socks because of slipping… This may be my only session with me wearing socks and it’s not with him!

These are the 5 tips for avoiding the most common acroyoga wardrobe malfunctions that work for my partner and me. With that said,
Basing and flying are non-gender-specific. Hayden and I base and fly each other. At the end of the day, wear whatever makes you feel confident, comfortable, and safe. I hope this helps you decide what to wear in your next acroyoga or couples yoga class.
